About

Why The Ghost Light Effect?

Naming anything is difficult. For anyone who has ever written an essay or a song, created a work of art, or even written an email, you know that the hardest part is coming up with a title that reflects your subject while inviting curiosity – all in a few words.

We knew we wanted to do a podcast that highlights the effect that an early experience in the arts can have on the rest of someone's life, regardless of the trajectory they follow.

After a lot of fruitless "brainstorming," we stumbled across the concept of the halo effect, which describes how a positive impression of something or someone in one area leads to a positive impression in another. For example, the impression that because someone is good-looking, they must be a good person.

Of course, this is often a mistaken assumption, so the concept of the halo effect doesn't apply directly to our concept. We want to tell the truth. So, we made our own version; The Ghost Light Effect describes the phenomenon by which values learned in Theatre have a positive impact on every other aspect of a person's life.

Beyond that, the ghost light is a symbol of hope. That single light that illuminates the stage when we've all left the building is a reminder that we will be coming back.
